CARICOM announces new initiative to deal with drug trade in Suriname

Stung by the seizure of illegal drugs overseas that have emanated from Suriname, the authorities in the CARICOM country have announced new initiatives to deal with the drug trade.

The Suriname Communications Service says the transit not only leads to national problems but also damages the country's image internationally and undermines credibility.

The authorities have since said checkpoints at strategic locations will be strengthened, and police, customs, and other services will also intensify checks and increase their visibility.

A working group has been established and is responsible for drawing up an action plan to improve the fight against drug trafficking in the country in the very short term.
