St. Thomas farmers, butchers face animal tag crisis

Alton Prince, a St. Thomas based cattle farmer and butcher

Cattle farmers and butchers in St Thomas are concerned over reports that there are no animal tags available in the parish.

Without a tag and passport, farmers cannot legally sell, transport, or slaughter cattle.

One affected farmer and butcher, Alton Prince, told Radio Jamaica News that the situation has left the trade at a standstill.

Mr. Prince said a one-month amnesty was previously granted, but that has expired, and the tags that arrived were not enough to cover even one district.

Farmers and butchers in the parish are now appealing to the authorities to urgently supply tags and resume tagging, so they may return to earning a living.
