CARICOM urged not to impose visa restrictions for Venezuelans

Former St. Kitts-Nevis Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas is urging CARICOM leaders not to impose visa restrictions on Venezuelans in light of the political crisis in the South American country.

The comment follows an announcement by the St. Lucian government that it is considering implementing visa requirements for Venezuelans visiting the island.

St. Lucian Prime Minister Allen Chastanet has asked the Ministry of Immigration to prepare the documentation for the visa restrictions to be considered by Cabinet.

But, Dr. Douglas is urging the region to re-think the position being adopted by St. Lucia, noting that CARICOM runs the risk of further isolating Venezuela if this move is pursued.

He said regional leaders should think mainly on how it could affect the people of Venezuela, especially those who are genuinely attempting to move from a situation that has become unbearable.
