Carreras hikes cigarette price

With just hours to go before the Government's new tax measures take effect Jamaicans have been hit with the news of another price increase.

Cigarette smokers have been told that they will have to dig deeper into their pockets to light up.

The island's largest distributor of tobacco products, Carreras Limited, has announced that the prices of its popular brands of cigarettes will be increased effective midnight.

In a statement issued Wednesday night, Carreras said the adjustments have resulted from the recently announced increase in the Special Consumption Tax (SCT) on cigarettes.

As a result, the average price for a stick of cigarette will move from $25 to $30.

"As a response to the recent announcement by the Finance Minister indicating an increase in the SCT as it relates to cigarettes, the Board and the management of the company have taken on the decision to increase the prices of cigarettes that will be selling to the trade. We basically will be communicating those prices to the media," Mr. Brown said.

The price for a carton of Craven "A" and Matterhorn will now be $4,950.

The new price for Dunhill and Rothmans will move to $5,550.

Carreras says the suggested retail price per 20 pack of Craven A and Matterhorn is $580 while smokers of Dunhill Lights, Full Flavour and Menthol will have to fork out $650.

The suggested retail price per 10 pack of Craven A and Matterhorn is $290 while Dunhill Full Flavour and Menthol will cost $325.50.
