A Jamaican teacher working in the United States is facing deportation after being arrested in Florida for allegedly showing obscene images to a teenage student.
Jonathan Rowe, a 45-year-old math teacher at Explorer K-8 School in Spring Hill, was charged last week with showing obscene material to a minor in the unlawful use of a communication device, both felonies on the Florida law.
According to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred when a 15-year-old male student was in Rowe's classroom during a planning period.
The student reportedly asked to see a photo previously taken with the teacher.
While scrolling through the phone, he said Rowe paused on images of what appeared to be his genitalia.
Rowe then allegedly encouraged the student to go to the bathroom and take explicit photos of himself, a request the boy refused.
Rowe admitted to having nude photos of himself on his phone, but declined to confirm whether they were shown to the student.
He was arrested at his home and booked into custody.
Authorities say the US Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement have since issued a detainer, meaning deportation proceedings will begin once Rowe is handed over to immigration officials.
