Cayman Airways COVID-19 protocol reportedly breached by couple traveling from Jamaica

Cayman Airways is conducting a probe after a woman was allowed to board a flight in Kingston on Wednesday and travel to Grand Cayman despite having a positive test for COVID-19.

According to Cayman News Service, the woman and her companion were detained when a Customs and Border Control (CBC) officer at Owen Roberts International Airport checked her PCR documents.

The couple was placed in government quarantine.

Cayman News Service says it appears that airline agents in Jamaica missed the woman's positive COVID test result.

Caymanian officials and Cayman Airways are trying to ascertain how the woman was able to breach COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

All the other passengers who were aboard the flight are currently in quarantine and will be closely monitored by health authorities.

Cayman Airways requires station agents in Kingston to conduct two checks of  negative COVID-19 test results before passengers are allowed to board flights bound for Grand Cayman.

The airline's President, Fabian Whorms, said given the apparent breach of  the process, measures have been put in place to introduce a third check at the gate prior to boarding.

He noted that all Cayman Airways flight crew are fully vaccinated, wear full personal protective equipment on all international flights, and were cleared by public health authorities in Grand Cayman of  any possible exposure.
