The people of the Cayman Islands will head to the polls on April 14, more than a month earlier than previously planned.

Nomination Day is March 1.

In a statement on Thursday, Premier Alden McLaughlin said after careful consideration he decided it was in the country’s best interest for Parliament to be dissolved immediately, which will have the effect of vacating the seat of the Speaker.

The government was facing a no confidence motion against Speaker McKeeva Bush who was convicted for assault.

Mr. Bush has refused to resign.

The decision to call an early election has angered opposition members who say the Premier's decision was politically motivated.

Cayman Opposition Leader, Arden McLean reacted to the announcement describing the Premier as “narcissistic” and “concerning”

“This is the Premier's way of not wanting to lose at anything and he’s punishing the very people he purports to represent in this country. And that bothers me,” Mr. McLean said.
