Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett

With tourism considered a major driver of economic growth, Minister Edmund Bartlett says there will be a strategic focus on local production of goods being supplied to the sector.

The Tourism Minister says there is a critical push to ensure the massive injection of visitors during peak seasons are consuming locally manufactured products to retain more of the earnings from the sector.

"We're going to be focusing on the supply side to enable the Jamaicans to own the supplies that the visitors consume when they come to Jamaica because the wealth of tourism is in its consumption. The consumption, as we say, the propensity to consume of the tourist, is three to five times that of the locals. Think about it," he pointed out.

Meanwhile, Mr. Bartlett said Jamaica remains ripe for investments.

"Jamaica has not lost even one of the investors that had promised to invest in our country pre-COVID. Indeed, we have gained three more...investors and so that is enabling us, first of all, to create what we call the critical mass that brings bigger and more important players to participate with us," he boasted.

The minister was speaking at the 70th anniversary celebration of the Jamaica Tourist Board during Caribbean Tourism Week in the United States.
