The coroner's inquest into the death of Mandeville businessman Jason Neil continued on Thursday with the Chief Investigating Officer taking the stand.
Detective Sergeant Pat Wallace provided a detailed description of what he observed from the time he arrived at the house in the upscale community of Ingleside.
On December 4, 2018, Mr. Neil was found with a gunshot wound in the bathroom of his home.
His death was initially being treated as a suicide, but eventually prompted a coroner's inquest based on evidence which later emerged.
Sergeant Wallace recalled seeing a Glock 9mm pistol and beside it, a magazine containing 18 rounds on the bathroom floor.
He said Mr. Neil's wife, her mother, father and cousin were inside the house, but that only Mrs. Neil's hands were swabbed.
When questioned on that decision by lead attorney for Mr. Neil's family, K.D. Knight, KC, Sergeant Wallace responded that he did not see the need to have the hands of the other family members swabbed, suggesting he would have had to also swab the hands of all the police officers at the scene.
Mr. Knight described the answer as facetious.
The lead attorney also suggested that the chief investigating officer was incompetent, to which he responded that he would never agree with anything put forward by Mr. Knight.
The matter will resume on October 3, at which time, the pathologist who performed the autopsy and a ballistics expert are expected to be available to testify.
