Cocoa Piece killer's sentence appeal adjourned

By Clinton McGregor

The appeal of Rushane Barnett, who is serving a life sentence for killing a family of five in Cocoa Piece, Clarendon, two years ago, was adjourned on Friday.

The matter is now set to go before the Court of Appeal in February next year.

The appeal was postponed after Barnett informed the court was he was seeking to retain a new attorney in the case.

This came after his attorney Kemar Robinson informed the Appeal Court that the trial judge, Leighton Pusey, was correct in his approach during the sentencing of Barnett, who was given five concurrent life sentences.

Mr. Robinson is no longer representing Barnett.

Barnett, who pleaded guilty to killing his cousin and her four children in 2022, is challenging the sentences handed down by the judge.

He contends that the sentences are excessive and that he should have benefitted from discounts since he had pleaded guilty early in the process.

Barnett will be eligible for parole after 61 years and eight months in prison.

He confessed to killing his cousin 31-year-old Kemisha Wright and her children: 15-year-old Kimanda Smith, 12-year-old Sharalee Smith, 5-year-old Rafaella Smith and 23-month-old Kishawn Henry at their home in Cocoa Piece on June 21, 2022.

The bodies had multiple stab wounds.

Barnett was later captured in Trelawny.
