Controvery brewing in T&T over upcoming visit of Vybz Kartel

Controversy is brewing in Trinidad and Tobago over the upcoming visit of Jamaican dancehall artiste, Vybz Kartel.

The country's new defence minister Wayne Sturge has ordered the trimming of Vybz Kartel's itinerary ahead of his scheduled performance in Port of Spain in May 31.

Legal sources within the ministry told Guardian Media that in one of his first official acts, Minister Sturge blocked several planned appearances by the Jamaican entertainer, including two media interviews and multiple public engagements.

Among the scheduled activities reported cancelled are radio and television appearances, a local press session, a meet-and-greet, school or youth centre visit and an official engagement schedule from May 28.

When contacted, Minister Sturge confirmed the orders saying he had concerns about Kartel interacting with vulnerable youth, citing the artiste's previous murder conviction, which, though overturned, was not dismissed on merit but on legal grounds.
