Corporate Area rat infestation still a source of concern

Almost one year after public concern peaked about rat infestation issues in sections of Kingston the problem is has not been fully addressed.

Last April, survey findings revealed at a meeting of the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC) indicated that rodents were overrunning some sections of the Corporate Area. Of the 120 communities surveyed, 82 percent were found to have rats.

Thirty-seven of these communities had moderate infestation, nine were light and two were very heavy.

Giving an update on Friday during RJR's weekly news forum, Everton Baker, Chief Public Health Inspector for Kingston and St. Andrew, explained that for the heavily infested areas, the authorities are just getting around to tackling the problem, as they had previously been focusing on public education.

The commercial district of New Kingston is one of the areas of primary focus, he explained, with business owners donatingthe supplies needed to get baiting done.

“We started baiting in another area and we have placed at least 1,900 bait stations in New Kingston and we collected nearly two hundred rats that were killed. We have another part of the programme where we implement an aggressive inspection with a team in that area where we are looking at the refuse management of every entity,” he said.
