Michael Belnavis, Chairman of the St. Ann Municipal Corporation and Mayor of St. Ann's Bay
The St. Ann Municipal Corporation is moving to curb congestion and illegal parking in town centres.
Chairman of the Corporation and Mayor of St. Ann's Bay, Michael Belnavis, says the municipal authority will be reintroducing the clamping of vehicles beginning in the capital.
Mayor Belnavis says increased congestion and illegal parking have resulted in traffic snarls.
"We have asked that the municipal police be more militant out there because as you know, it's a cat and mouse game. People have been parking all over the townships, you know, St. Ann's Bay, Ocho Rios, Brown's Town in particular, creating a lot of mayhem. A lot of it is coming from taxis and we are now doing a pushback.
"What we are saying is that you utilise the municipal parking, pay the fees for the areas that are designated. The fact is that we cannot have people just doing what they want, parking wherever they want, creating congestion in the townships, disrupting traffic, disrupting people's business as they go about their lawful business in the middle of the day. It just can't work and we are putting a stop to it," the mayor declared.
