The threat of protest action now hangs over Jamaica's prison system.
Unions representing the more than one thousand correctional officers have served a three-day ultimatum on the Government, to settle the issue of the alignment of their salaries. This expires on Friday.
The Jamaica Federation of Corrections and the University and Allied Workers' Union have warned that, if there is no response, they will not be held responsible for action taken by the officers.
Arlington Turner, Chairman of the Federation, told RJR News the members were extremely restive.
It's reported that on December 19 a letter was sent to Horace Dalley, Minister Without Portfolio in the Ministry of Finance & Planning, seeking an urgent meeting to discuss the salary issue.
The Federation said a letter was received from Mr. Dalley, referring the matter to Wayne Jones, Deputy Financial Secretary, but to date, a meeting has not been scheduled.
