Of the students who sat this year's Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate exams in Jamaica, only 19.2 per cent received five or more subjects, inclusive of Mathematics and English.
This is a 1.2% increase when compared to last year.
Education Minister Dr Dana Morris-Dixon, speaking at the 2025 Caribbean Examination Council results press conference on Friday morning, revealed that 44 per cent of public school students obtained a passing grade in Mathematics, while 85 per cent of students passed English A.
In addition , there was a five per cent increase in the number of students who achieved passing grades in CSEC Mathematics compared to last year.
There was a nine per cent increase in passes for English A when compared with 2024.
Region-wide
Across the region, CXC is reporting improvements in major subject areas, including Mathematics and English A in the CSEC exams.
Providing a breakdown of the overall regional performance, Director of Operations in Examinations Services, Dr. Nicole Manning said there has been a notable increase in the number of grade ones, particularly in English A.
For English A a 76 per cent regional pass rate was recorded in 2024 while for Mathematics, 39 per cent of candidates were successful in 2025 when compared with 36 per cent in the previous year.
Information Technology had a five per cent increase in the overall performance, with a 23 per cent jump in the number of grade ones.
Irregularities
Meanwhile, Dr Manning says there has been a noticeable rise in irregularities, including the use of unauthorised devices.
She says there has been an increase in the use of smart watches.
Dr Manning says CXC is closely monitoring and adjusting its systems to respond to the introduction of new devices such as smart glasses.
