Deputy superintendent freed in sexual assault case

By Clinton McGregor

Deputy Superintendent of Police Gary Chambers was on Thursday found not guilty of sexually assaulting a female Corporal of Police.

The trial before the St. Catherine Parish Court ended after his lawyer, Peter Champagnie KC, delivered his closing address to senior parish judge, Desiree Alleyne.

The prosecution had presented evidence in which it was said that Chambers had attempted to fondle the female corporal of police in a service vehicle on October 22, 2016.

DSP Chambers was charged following a ruling from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

He vehemently denied the allegations and argued that the allegations arose only after it became known to the Corporal that he did not support her request for promotion.

Mr. Champagnie in presenting the case for DSP Chambers highlighted what he called inconsistencies in the Corporal's testimony.

Chief among them was the fact the Corporal's claim that DSP Chambers had apologised for his action at a mediation meeting was not supported by an independent witness at the meeting.

It was suggested that the Corporal only sought to make a report after she learnt that DSP Chambers was planning to sue her for defamation of character.

DSP Chambers was also represented by attorney Richard Lynch who appeared with Mr. Champagnie.
