Doctors group says health infrastructure problem is widespread

By Prince Moore

The Jamaica Medical Doctors' Association (JMDA) has asserted that the infrastructure related challenges faced by Bustamante Hospital for Children are not unique to that institution as similar issues are evident throughout the country's health-care facilities.

Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton was forced to call a press briefing last Thursday following claims that life saving surgeries were being delayed due to problems with the air conditioning unit in the operating theatre.

In a media release late on Sunday, the JMDA said, over the years it has highlighted the widespread infrastructure and human resource deficiencies, in repeated communications with the Ministry of Health & Wellness.

But it said, despite numerous letters and other efforts by the JMDA to engage the ministry, there have been limited responses to some of these critical issues affecting both healthcare workers and the quality of patient care.

The Association is urging the Ministry to take steps immediately to resolve these widespread challenges.

According to the JMDA, it stands ready to work with the Ministry in the best interest of the nation's healthcare system and the well-being of every Jamaican.

The Parliamentary Opposition last week said there was a major crisis at the Bustamante Hospital for Children and is accusing the Health Minister of seeking to downplay the situation.
