Amid growing discontent among trade unions, the Ministry of Labour plans to introduce a new work permit system for foreigners seeking job opportunities in Jamaica.

Labour Minister Pearnel Charles Jr., speaking at Wednesday's Post Cabinet Press Briefing, disclosed that the government had commenced work to replace the present work permit system through creation of a new web-based work management system.

Mr Charles said strict conditions will be applied to ensure employers prioritise the Jamaican workforce.

Several companies have been complaining that their operations have been affected by a lack of skilled workers in Jamaica and have urged the government to allow them to import workers.
