The Press Association of Jamaica (PAJ) has expressed sadness at the death of sports journalist and broadcaster Donald Oliver.
He died Tuesday morning at the age of 40.
In a statement Monday afternoon, the PAJ says Mr. Oliver was widely respected across the media fraternity for his professionalism, meticulous preparation and passion for telling stories of Jamaican and Caribbean sport, particularly football and cricket.
It added that his work as a commentator, presenter and producer helped to elevate sports journalism in the region and inspired a new generation of young broadcasters.
Mr. Oliver has been recognised for his work at the highest level, having won several National Journalism Awards over the years, including Best Television Feature/Documentary Award and the Hugh Crosskill/Raymond Sharpe Award for Sports Journalism.
He previously worked at Radio Jamaica, Television Jamaica, CVM TV and Sportsmax, before joining the Jamaica Observer team in August 2025.
Meanwhile, State Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister Senator Abka Fitz-Henley has expressed shock at news at the passing of Mr. Oliver.
Senator Fitz-Henley described Mr. Oliver as an outstanding journalist and a decent human being, whose approach to his work did not reflect ill-intent.
He also applauded Mr. Oliver's competent commentary that exhilarated audiences.
"He was equally competent at news and current affairs and had the interest of people at heart. Incidentally, a few weeks ago, he journeyed to St. Elizabeth and spoke to people there after Hurricane Melissa. [He] also spoke to myself on MP Floyd Green in a bid to bring attention to the plight of those impacted. He was always willing to offer a word of encouragement to his colleagues in a bid to see that colleague expand in their abilities and how they are executing their craft. And for me, that will be among his enduring legacies," the senator reflected.
