Prince Moore reports

The Electoral Commission of Jamaica, in its role as political ombudsman, is calling for all political parties and their supporters to demonstrate respect for each other and the democratic process.

The call comes amid increasing reports of political paraphernalia, including posters, banners and flyers, being removed, defaced and destroyed, allegedly by people who support the opposing candidates or parties.

Chairman of the ECJ Earl Jarrett says, the behaviour undermines the spirit of democracy and peaceful political engagement.

Mr. Jarrett says, despite the passion that comes with political campaigning, democracy thrives where there is mutual respect.

The Office of the Political Ombudsman says, each Jamaican has the right to participate in the political process, including the right to promote and display their political choice without fear, interference or intimidation.

The office is encouraging political leaders to set the tone of unity, tolerance and restraint.

It says it will continue to monitor campaign activity and urges the public to report violations of the agreement and declaration on political conduct.
