Education Minister Fayval Williams has condemned Tuesday's violent attack on a teacher at the Vere Technical High School, in Clarendon.
Classes at the institution were suspended Wednesday after teachers staged a sit-in to protest against the decision of the police to lay charges against a female teacher who was earlier attacked on the compound by relatives of a student.
Principal Oneil Lewin told Radio Jamaica News that the protesting teachers vowed not to resume classes until the matter was investigated by the Ministry of Education.
In bemoaning the incident, Minister Williams said her Ministry remains fully committed to supporting the affected teacher and improving school security.
She said a meeting is being scheduled with the Ministry, Vere Technical High School teachers and the Jamaica Teachers' Association.
She added that, for months, the Education Ministry has been implementing initiatives and urging parents, guardians and community members to help curb school violence.
In light of this, she said it is deeply disheartening to see a parent involved in an act of violence.
Minister Williams said the Ministry continues to encourage collaboration among parents, teachers, students, and community members to combat school violence.
