Elderly woman hospitalised for severe trauma after Fly Jamaica crash landing

An elderly woman, who was among those aboard the Fly Jamaica aircraft that crash landed last Friday at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport in Guyana is currently hospitalised after reportedly suffering severe trauma, which resulted in the swelling of the brain.

Rookhia Kalloo, 86, and her daughter Lilawattie Persaud as well as her granddaughter, who has a disability, were among those aboard the Fly Jamaica plane, which was en route to Toronto, Canada when it experienced hydraulic issues.

This prompted the aircraft to make an emergency landing.

However, the plane overshot the runway and veered to a closed section, resulting in damage to the right wing.

Guyana's Stabroek News says when it spoke with Ms Persaud Wednesday afternoon, she explained that her mother, who suffers from a heart condition, was taken to the Woodlands Hospital on Monday morning, where she remains a patient.

Ms Persaud said doctors say they cannot do much else for her as her brain is swelling and shutting down.

Detailing the events that led to her mother's hospitalisation, Ms Persaud says her mother was very hysterical after the accident but did not complain of having suffered any injuries.

Ms Persaud said days later, she noticed her mother seemed somewhat disoriented.

A decision was made to take her to the hospital, where she was admitted and underwent several tests.

Ms Persaud said her mother has lost her ability to speak and move on her own.

She said, added to her frustration is the failure of Fly Jamaica to provide details as it relates to flights for those who are stranded in Guyana.

The family was on vacation in Guyana for four weeks prior to the accident.
