EOJ: Voter turnout higher in today's municipal by-elections

Director of Elections Glasspole Brown

Director of Elections Glasspole Brown says more voters have turned out for the municipal by-elections in the Morant Bay and Aenon Town divisions when compared with the constituency by-elections in Trelawny Southern and St. Andrew North Western.

He said this was expected as the major political parties are contesting the municipal elections, while the People's National Party has opted not to challenge in the constituency elections.

The Electoral Office of Jamaica said the voter turnout in the electoral division of Morant Bay was 13.63 per cent, while it was 19.01 per cent in Aenon Town at 11 a.m.

For the St. Andrew North Western constituency, the turnout was 2.65 per cent and for Trelawny Southern it was 9.43 per cent at 11 o'clock.

Providing figures up to 2 p.m., the EOJ said the Aenon Town division recorded a 39.88 per cent turnout, followed by the Morant Bay division with 27.78 per cent. Meanwhile, voter turnout for the St. Andrew North Western constituency was 4.91 per cent and 18.25 per cent for Trelawny Southern.

Speaking Friday on Radio Jamaica's Hotline, Mr. Brown said voting was going smoothly, despite some complaints of a slow process, especially in the two municipal by-elections where there is more traffic.

He said the issue has been compounded by persons who turned up without their voter identification cards, which leads to longer processing than usual.
