Guyana: Calls grow for international probe into death of 11-year-old girl

In Guyana, the call for international assistance in the probe into the death of 11-year-old Adrianna Younge has intensified with several political parties and the civil society actors dismissing a report from President Irfan Ali that the girl did not die from forceful drowning.

Adriana went missing a week ago during a family outing at the Double Day Hotel on the east end of Essequibo.

She was found dead in the hotel's pool the following day although family members say the pool was searched several times prior to the body being discovered.

An autopsy conducted by three international pathologists found that the 11-year-old died as a result of drowning.

Earlier this week, President Ali said he received a report from the police that the pathologists also ruled out theories of forceful drowning or any other means of killings.

But Adriana's family says the pathologists made no such findings known to them or their attorney.

At a press conference on Wednesday, leader of the Alliance for Change Nigel Hughes said President Ali is no pathologist and should not be making such pronouncements.

According to Mr. Hughes, a preliminary report from the family's lawyer Darren Wade, who spoke directly with the pathologists, only gave the cause of death as drowning.
