Under growing scrutiny, the family of Viola Destin, the elderly woman found in a mummified state in Old Hope, Little London, Westmoreland, has rejected claims of neglect.
This, as questions swirl over how none of her relatives realised the full extent of her isolation as the police say Ms. Destin died nearly two years ago on December 10, 2023.
But instead of reporting the death, Ms. Destin's live-in caregiver, 54-year-old Gena Robinson, concealed the body inside a room at the house.
A relative of Ms. Destin summoned the police on July 6 after becoming suspicious.
Her brother, Hartley Destin, sought to explain that there were no major red flags to indicate that something was amiss. He said he saw the caretaker on one occasion and enquired about his sister, but the woman told him: "Nuh worry yourself, man. Your sister inna good hands."
Ms. Destin's decomposed remains were seen lying on a mattress.
Ms. Robinson is facing the charges of a failure to report the death of a person, preventing the lawful burial of a corpse and attempting to pervert the course of justice.
It's understood that Ms. Destin is originally from Sheffield, Negril, Westmoreland.
A resident of Old Hope, who is also a member of Ms. Destin's church family, believes the criticism against the woman's relatives is misplaced.
In defending the family, she insisted that they did not abandon their relative.
