A female student of Ocho Rios High School in St. Ann is nursing a bullet wound to the leg, while a 14-year-old male student is in police custody following a shooting incident.
The female student's condition is not considered life threatening.
A glock 9 millimetre was recovered from the scene.
Senior Superintendent Dwight Powell, head of the St. Ann Police, said the 14-year-old male student was allegedly playing with the gun in a classroom about 12:45 Monday afternoon when it went off.
"Information received and investigation carried out indicated that a 14-year-old male student of Pineapple, Ocho Rios, St. Ann took a firearm to school. He was in the Social Studies lab, along with other students, when they were handling the firearm and it went off, injuring a 12-year-old female student."
He said the wounded student was assisted to St. Ann's Bay Hospital by the grade coordinator, and is being treated for a gunshot wound to her thigh.
She is said to be in serious, but stable condition.
"Teachers were alerted and went to the classroom where one grey and black knapsack was recovered from the floor containing one firearm," SSP Powell revealed.
He said the St. Ann police are deepening their probe into how the student came in possession of the firearm.
