Fiery protest in Spanish town following police shooting

Fiery protests have broken out in Spanish Town, St Catherine over Friday's fatal shooting of an alleged gangster by the police in Top Banks.
 
The situation has caused chaos in the town centre and disrupted public transport.
 
Several thoroughfares, including March Pen Road, Burke Road and the Spanish Town Bypass have been blocked with debris, some of which was set on fire.
 
The Jamaica Fire Brigade was escorted to the locations by the police, only for the debris to quickly lit again.
 
The bus terminus and taxi park were also blocked off with debris, preventing access to transport operators and commuters.
 
The police and military have been maintaining a presence in Top Banks after 44 year old Sheldon Walters, otherwise called Termite, of Dover district, Kitson Town was killed, allegedly during a confrontation.
 
The incident reportedly occurred about 7:45pm. 
 
The police say a firearm was recovered.
 
High alert
 
In the meantime, the police in the St Catherine North and South divisions have been placed on high alert following the shooting of two alleged gangsters in Spanish Town and Central Village.
 
Acting head of Area 5, Senior Superintendent Christopher Phillips, in a communique, said the police have received credible threats against members.
 
SSP Phillips says the threats are being taken seriously and the headquarters is working with intelligence units to monitor the situation.
 
Head of the Jamaica Constabulary Force's Corporate Communications Unit, Senior Superintendent Stephanie Lindsay says Spanish Town is tense at this time.
 
The fatal shooting in Central Village occurred about 12:15 Saturday morning.
 
St Joseph Campbell, 37,  of Brown's Lane, Central Village was shot during an alleged confrontation with the police.
 
A nine millimetre pistol was reportedly recovered.
