Another attempt is being made to reach an agreement relating to the implementation of a flexi-work arrangement at Caribbean Products Limited, part of the Seprod Group of Companies.
A meeting at the Ministry of Labour and Social Security on Monday between the National Workers Union (NWU) and representatives of Caribbean Products ended in a stalemate.
The parties were scheduled to continue discussions at 8:30 Tuesday morning.
Unionised employees staged a protest outside the Spanish Town Road facility Monday morning against the implementation of the flexi-work arrangement without proper consultation. They argued that the company ignored their concerns about aspects of the arrangement, in particular reduced salaries.
Khurt Fletcher, Island Supervisor at the NWU, outlined that neither party was willing to compromise at Monday's meeting at the Labour Ministry.
Mr. Fletcher said he is not optimistic about a resolution at this level.
"We spent most of the time at the Ministry of Labour with the company insisting that they want to talk, but they would only talk along these lines, which doesn't say much to us," he pointed out.
Mr. Fletcher argued that the workers could see through their current contract until December 31, but the company insists on making the changes immediate.
"It doesn't make sense to us to make the change in this particular way. And we want to engage you to see if we can mitigate against not all of the losses, but some at this time, and see whether or not we can reach an agreement over time. But the company seems only intent on implementation of the flexi-work arrangement," he lamented.
