Opposition Leader Mark Golding
Opposition Leader Mark Golding is urging the National Water Commission to reverse its decision not to share water quality reports with the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation.
Minister with responsibility for Water, Matthew Samuda, has expressed support for the NWC's decision.
But speaking in Clarendon on Sunday evening, Mr. Golding criticised the decision and insisted that the public must be made aware of the quality of potable water in their taps.
"What have they done? Well, the NWC said they're not going to attend meetings anymore of the KSAMC. And they have to adjust that position and the most recent position I heard is, well, they will attend but they're not going to share the test results; they're going to publish it on a website. To me, that is childish and petty. That's not the way to run a country," he contended.
"Transparency, sharing information with the relevant body, which has statutory responsibilities for this issue, that is the way to go," he suggested, as he accused the government of wanting "to cover things up rather than deal with them frontally".
"You build confidence by being open and honest about things and adapting an approach which is pragmatic and sensible to resolve them," the Opposition Leader maintained.
