Telecommunications company, Flow Jamaica, says its crews are trying to repair the damage to its fibre cable by vandals in the Half Way Tree areaon Friday morning.
There was major disruption to services for Flow customers in Half Way Tree, New Kingston, and surrounding areas.
The company says early Friday morning, vandals set fire to fibre cables after breaching a manhole.
Danielle Savory, Senior Manager of Communications at Flow, described the incident as a "senseless setback" that has left many homes and businesses without critical voice and internet services on what is typically a busy day.
"Investigations by our technical team have revealed multiple severances to both our fibre and our legacy network cabes in the area. Our technical teams estimate that repairs will be completed by 9 p.m. tonight and services will restored to customers on our fibre network thereafter. We further wish to advise that customers who are served by our legacy network will need to be migrated to our fibre network before their services can be restored," she disclosed.
Ms. Savory said despite ongoing investments in securing network infrastructure, these acts of vandalism impose significant financial costs on the company and disrupt services for customers.
Flow is urging patience and understanding from affected customers as restoration efforts continue.
