Jamaica's criminal justice system has been boosted with the opening of the Forensic Pathology Autopsy Suite, the first of its kind in Jamaica and the Caribbean.
The facility is set to increase the forensic capacity of the Jamaica Constabulary Force and reduce inefficiencies hampering criminal investigations.
National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang says the forensic unit will assist in providing data to the courts, especially in complex cases.
He says the facility can accommodate 150 bodies.
"With storage for 150 cases, it will allow us to be prepared for even major accidents. So we don't wish to have any, but in any situation where we are caught on run for whatever case, whether it be an epidemic...accidents or unfortunate event anywhere in the city, the autopsy suite can handle volume," he noted.
Dr. Chang was speaking Thursday at the opening of the $680 million facility, located on Orange Street in Kingston.
