Global technology outage causes delays for some flights to Jamaica

Delano Seiveright, Senior Strategist in the Tourism Ministry

Flights leaving Jamaica have not been impacted by the global technology outage which has disrupted the operations of multiple industries.

However, Senior Advisor & Strategist in the Ministry of Tourism Delano Seiveright says passengers coming to Jamaica from the United States are experiencing delays, particularly on United, Delta and American Airlines.

"We were told that American Airlines was able to successfully re-establish their system and we were told that other airlines were working to reboot their systems too, so there are delays for folks coming to Jamaica, who were scheduled to depart early in the morning, but we hope that the situation will stabilse in the coming hours," he said.

Microsoft says the underlying cause of the global tech outage has been fixed, however, residual impact is still affecting some Microsoft 365 apps and services.

The outage was attributed to CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity firm whose software is used by scores of industries around the world to protect against hackers and outside breaches.

Crowdstrike said a defect in one of its software updates hit Windows operating systems.

Services from banking to healthcare were hit by system problems.
