Opposition Leader Mark Golding
Opposition Leader Mark Golding has again called for Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness to say definitively whether Jamaica will adopt the Caribbean Court of Justice as the country's final appellate Court under the current constitutional reform process.
A Joint Select Committee of Parliament is reviewing the proposed constitutional amendments for Jamaica to become a Republic, but the Opposition and the Government are at odds over whether the UK-based Privy Council will remain the country's final court.
The government argued that the constitutional changes are being done in phases and the matter of the CCJ is not included in the current phase.
Mr Golding has withdrawn his members from the Joint Select Committee in protest.
He addressed the matter again at a meeting of his People's National Party in St Catherine on the weekend, reiterating that the Opposition will not participate in the sittings of the Joint Select Committee unless the Prime Minister addresses the impasse.
"I want constitutional reform, and we have been fighting for it for decades," he affirmed.
But he said the reform must be comprehensive: "We want to establish a republic; we want full sovereignty for our people; time come for Jamaica to believe in itself and run its own affairs, but we're not into this piecemeal approach, where you put the cart before the horse."
"Justice is important for the people and we stand up for justice, and we say if you want to move forward, come wi start doing it wid respect and gi wi some good argument! Otherwise, the show will not go on," he declared.
