Golding reaffirms commitment to eliminating fixed-term contracts

PNP President Mark Golding and Wayne Chen, President of the Jamaica Employers Federation

Opposition Leader Mark Golding has reaffirmed his commitment to eliminating the practice of fixed term contracts in the private and public sectors if his party forms the next government.

Mr Golding, speaking at a meeting of his People's National Party in Hanover on Friday, argued that the fixed-term contract system is being misused and is denying workers their basic rights.

He said the contract system has to be reviewed, especially for workers in the BPO and tourism sectors.

Mr Golding added that he will be meeting with members of the private sector to discuss the issue which has been of concern for the island's trade unions.

JEF wants dialogue

In response, Wayne Chen, President of the Jamaica Employers Federation [JEF], told Radio Jamaica News that his organization is ready to sit with Mr Golding to discuss the challenges facing employers who are offering contracts to their employees.

He cautioned that the tourism and BPO sectors could become uncompetitive if the fixed term contract arrangement is eliminated from these sectors.

Mr Chen agrees that some employers have been abusing the system.

He also wants a review of the labour laws as it pertains to redundancy.
