The Parliamentary Opposition has credited its refusal to support the extension of States of Emergency, in part, for the recent decline in the country's murder rate.
Opposition Leader Mark Golding, making his contribution to Budget Debate on Tuesday, asserted that the 30 per cent reduction in the number of murders so far this year, compared with 2024, is indicative of the effectiveness of targeted policing strategies, over what he termed the ineffective States of Emergency.
Mr Golding said, while the parliamentary opposition welcomes the recent decline in murders, the homicide rate remains alarmingly high.
He said a future PNP led government will adopt a balanced approach to tackle the root causes of crime, including a public health approach to violence prevention, pre-charge detention of suspects and social transformation initiatives.
