Transport Minister Daryl Vaz has expressed satisfaction with the performance of the Compressed Natural Gas buses included in the fleet of the JUTC.

The government had projected that the CNG buses would result in significant savings and operational efficiencies for the state run bus company.

Currently there are 125 of these buses in the JUTC's fleet, "with another 70 to arrive by July," the minister disclosed.

The Transport Minister told Radio Jamaica News that, since the introduction of the buses, the assessment so far has been favourable, citing efficiency gains, adding that "cost savings are tremendous in terms of the comparison with the diesel buses.

He revealed that three "different types" of electric buses are currently being tested, alongside the introduction of the CNG units, in keeping with the Government's policy decision to transition away from diesel powered busesz.

Mr Vaz disclosed that it currently costs J$60,000 to fill one Diesel Dragon Bus, compared with $20,000 to fill one of the CNG buses.

This shift to CNG, addresses other issues within the JUTC, including diesel theft.

In that regard, he said the authorities have been reaping success from measures to identify those responsible for stealing oil from the state run bus company, with one person being taken into custody last week.
