Government scholarship winners announced

Thirty-three government scholarships have been awarded to students from primary, all age, junior high and preparatory schools islandwide, through the Ministry of Education.

Additionally, 49 other students were the recipients of scholarships provided by private sector companies.

The top boy scholarship winner is Daniel Lawla of St. Richard’s Primary.

Two girls tied for the top scholarship, they are Kadian Farquharson of Lannaman’s Preparatory and Anya Chuck of Hosanna Kindergarten and Preparatory.

The three were awarded the Scotia Bank Foundation Top Boy and Top Girl scholarships.  

The top four recipients of named government scholarships are Shaquille Crosse of Allman Town Primary, who won the Marcus Garvey Scholarship; Jae-Anne Smith of St. Richards Primary, who won the JAG Smith Scholarship; Jesse James of Black River Primary and Infant, who won the George William Gordon Scholarship and Hanif Brown of Airy Castle Primary who won the Paul Bogle Scholarship.

Other Government of Jamaica scholarships were awarded to 15 boys and 14 girls from primary, preparatory and private schools islandwide.

Fourteen boys and 14 girls are usually selected for the scholarships.

Fifteen boys were chosen this year as two boys tied for one of the scholarships. 

Private sector scholarship donors include ScotiaBank, Sagicor Life Jamaica Limited, Guardian Life, Petrojam Ltd, Horlicks and Jamaica National Building Society.

The top four scholarships awarded by the Government of Jamaica are valued at $180,000 each while the other 28 scholarships are valued at $100,000 each.
