The Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities is pushing the government to urgently enact amendments to the Disabilities Act to protect prison inmates with mental illness.

Cleon Porter, Executive Director of the Jamaica Charity For The Homeless and Disabled also wants his organization to be allowed to help fast-track the implementation of a draft Correctional Services Standard, proposed in 2023.

Questioning what progress has been made on the draft standard, he urged the JCPD to "leverage its influence and authority to expedite the adoption and implementation of this draft standard."

"Doing so will significantly enhance the protection of mentally ill inmates, improve safety for all inmates and staff, and shield the government and taxpayers from potential liabilities, resulting from neglect or inadequate policies," he added.
