Transport Minister Daryl Vaz says the government has commenced discussions with the operators of ride-hailing companies, on safety measures to protect their passengers.
The government had requested the meeting following the recent abduction and murder of a school teacher from St. Catherine.
Mr. Vaz had initially announced a ban on ride-hailing services but later acknowledged that the government did not have the legal authority to do so.
Speaking Wednesday at the post Cabinet press briefing, the Transport Minister said his Ministry has been holding talks with several of the platforms to discuss alternatives to a ban which could address the government's concerns.
A working committee has been set up.
"They had a meeting yesterday at 2 o'clock, and there are several more meetings scheduled in relation, not only to inDrive, but inDrive and Uber are the two big ones. So we want to make sure that we kind of bring them together so that whatever it is that's being proposed is being discussed at a table with everybody rather than individual."
Mr. Vaz is hopeful that there will be a positive outcome to the discussions in terms of interim measures that address the concerns of the government and police.
He said the talks so far appear to be "moving in the right direction".
