The mother of two boys who died in a fire at their home at Gregory Park in Portmore, St. Catherine on Monday evening is in serious condition in hospital after being badly burned.

The children's father, Deon Bell, says his wife was injured while attempting to rescue them.

Mr. Bell also suffered minor burns when he ran into the blaze to save the boys.

But the parents were unable to reach five-year-old Joshua and 10-year-old Deon Jr., who was autistic and non-verbal, before the fire engulfed the one-bedroom board structure in the community known as Mexico.

"Mi cyah believe it, up to now. Mi cyah believe it," Mr. Bell groaned, noting that he had just come from work when he saw his home on fire.

"Mi see it pon TV all the while...but mi never know seh it woulda reach my doorway this type a way. Everything, mi two children dem, gone. Sometime mi a seh why, Father God, why?" said Mr. Bell, still in disbelief.

The father said it is believed that a lit candle caused the blaze.

The cause of the fire is to be determined by the police and fire investigators.

Alando Terrelonge, Member of Parliament for St. Catherine East Central, has said he will be providing assistance to the grieving family.
