Police Commissioner Dr. Kevin Blake says there has been a seven per cent increase in the number of illegal guns seized so far this year.
There is also a 41 per cent increase in seizure of ammunition.
Dr. Blake gave an update on security matters Tuesday afternoon during his maiden press conference since becoming Commissioner less than one month ago.
The Commissioner said the JCF's focus on illegal firearms has yielded tangible results.
"In 2024, there has been a seven per cent increase in gun seizures, with pistols being the most commonly seized firearm. Ammunition seizures rose by 41 per cent, reflecting our intensified efforts to rid our streets of these dangerous tools of violence," he noted.
With greater legislative support through the new Firearms Act, Dr. Blake said, the police will intensify their focus on removing illegal weapons from communities.
"This intensification of our focus will be reflected in adjustments to our organisational structure, which will be announced in short order," he disclosed.
The Police Commissioner pointed out that an analysis of the implement used in major crimes reveals that firearms remain the predominant tool in murders.
Firearms have featured in 84 per cent of the cases since the start of the year.
According to the JCF, 292 murders were recorded from January 1 to April 6 this year, compared with 341 for the corresponding period this year.
This represents a 14 per cent decline.
Commissioner Blake added that arrests and charges for major crimes have seen a nine per cent increase.
He said the increase in arrests and charges is a clear indicator of the force's commitment to holding perpetrators accountable and delivering justice for victims.
