Guyana: GTU strike enters fourth week

The strike by teachers in Guyana for improved salaries and working conditions entered its fourth week with the union urging its members to remain united.

Guyana Teachers Union president, Dr. Mark Lyte, yesterday said efforts for a resumption of talks with the Ministry of Education have so far been unsuccessful.

He added that they were unable to arrive on terms of resumption that would be fair to the educators of the country.

Three months ago, the GTU began the industrial action but halted it after filing a court case over the government's planned decision to slash the salaries of striking teachers and to also discontinue deducting union dues.
