President Irfaan Ali says there is no security cooperation between the Guyana and the United States governments aimed at encouraging aggression in the region.
Addressing a ceremony marking the United States' 248th anniversary of independence last night, Dr. Ali spoke of the strong bilateral and trade relations between the two countries, praising the North American powerhouse for its tremendous support in strengthening security cooperation with Guyana.
President Ali also made it clear that the current military cooperation between the Guyana Defence Force and the United States Army's Southern Command is rooted in ensuring peace and stability in South America and the Caribbean.
His comments were in apparent reference to the usual flurry of social media messages posted by top Venezuelan government officials.
Guyana and Venezuela are engaged in a century-old border dispute with Caracas claiming ownership of the Essequibo region in Guyana.
