Supporters of both the governing Jamaica Labour Party and the opposition People's National have listed good fiscal management as well as family tradition as some of the reasons why they will mark their ballots in the upcoming general election.
This was revealed in the latest national survey conducted by the Don Anderson led Market Research Services, which canvassed responses from 1,012 people of voting age, across the island.
Of the 39.3 per cent of respondents who say they would vote for the People's National Party if an election were to be called now, 38.1 per cent say the party has the country's best interest at heart.
Pollster Don Anderson says this reason was popular among participants 65 years and older.
Some 34.6 per cent said they are PNP loyalists or will be voting based on family tradition, while a notable 30.4 per cent say they would vote for the parliamentary opposition because the country needed a change or a different party should get a shot at governance.
Another 28 per cent of respondents believe the PNP is better able to manage the country's economic situation.
Also listed among their reasons for supporting the opposition in the upcoming general election is that it has a better track record of managing the country, it caters to the poor, increased job creation and too much corruption and scandals from the government.
Meanwhile, of the 30.2 per cent of respondents who say they would mark their ballots for the governing party if the general election is called now, 48.8 per cent say the JLP has the country's best interest at heart.
Mr. Anderson said that reasoning was popular among the younger JLP supporters.
Also notable is the 45.5 per cent of participants who say their support is driven by family tradition or because they always vote for the party.
Mr. Anderson says this is historic for the JLP, which has never had particularly strong support for traditional reasons.
Rounding out the top responses is the 33.7 per cent who say they are inclined to vote for the JLP because it is better able to manage the country's economic situation and the 30.1 per cent who say the party has a better track record of management.
Among the other reasons listed by JLP supporters are that the administration provides more jobs, caters to the poor and has good performing members of Parliament.
The national poll, which has a margin of error of plus or minus three per cent, was conducted between September 27 and October 3.
