Prime Minister Andrew Holness

Prime Minister Andrew Holness says he will not allow mounting pressure to call the general election to derail the progress of crucial policy frameworks being instituted by his government.

Making a spontaneous appearance at the St. Thomas Eastern constituency office on Friday afternoon, Prime Minister Holness said with his Cabinet being able to navigate the country through a pandemic, reduce debt and grow the economy, it is critical that voters and the government allow policy decisions to mature.

He said the Jamaica Labour party has been dedicated to rectifying the poor conditions of the country inherited from the People's National Party.

"I would be very cautious about assuming that persons are depending on elections to see a change in their circumstances. The truth is that elections are a necessary and important part of our democracy. But they also throw off policy cycles, especially when you're within a certain runway and your policies are going to now yield results and then elections come, and then you have to start back all over again. So we know that elections are due. But we are not going to in any way detract from the programmes and policies of the government," he insisted.
