Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) leader and Prime Minister Andrew Holness has said his administration is making progress in the reform of the country and urged Jamaicans to ignore detractors.

Mr. Holness listed the accomplishments of the government as he addressed supporters at the Clarendon South Eastern constituency conference on Sunday.

He also spoke to some of the issues which have been the subject of public debate over several weeks, including the new public sector compensation scheme.

Mr. Holness urged supporters to counter negative comments with facts.

"So let them trick you with falsehoods, let them come with their lies, we will defeat them with truth. We will defeat them with performance. We will defeat them by our results; by our works you will know who really cares about you," he declared.

'Fix issues, focus less on detractors'

But People's National Party (PNP) President Mark Golding has said Mr. Holness should redirect his attention to the social and financial challenges facing Jamaicans instead of focusing on those who are critical of his management of the country.

Speaking in the House of Representatives last Tuesday, Mr. Holness made comments similar to those on Sunday as he warned Jamaicans not to be misled by people he described as political entrepreneurs, operating on social media.

Mr. Golding hit back at the comment while addressing the Linstead Division annual conference in St. Catherine on Sunday.

He cited the high crime rate and inadequate resources in the health care system as issues requiring urgent attention.

"Wah really bun the people and bun me to, is the way the country is going down the drain, the way the people a suffer in the country, the way that cost of living has gone so high and the government has not helped the people in any meaningful way, the way the education system is underperforming in a very serious way," the PNP president complained.

He accused Mr. Holness of going "a bit haywire" with his comments about political operatives on social media, suggesting to the JLP Leader and Prime Minister that criticism is "par for the course" especially for politicians, so "yuh haffi can take that".
