Holness urges JLP to accurately inform public about government's work

Prime Minister Andrew Holness

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has issued a directive to the Jamaica Labour Party and its supporters, urging them to ensure the party's work does not go unnoticed, in what he describes as a sea of disinformation and falsehoods.

Mr. Holness, who stridently reaffirmed the government's commitment to media freedom and pluralism, argued that there are biased narratives being purported by some members of the fourth estate that eventually skew the public's perception of the JLP.

Recounting a previous experience, Prime Minister Holness said he had complained to a journalist about a particular story he thought was biased and unfair to him, but was told: "Mr. Holness, I am not your PR firm".

He urged the governing party to take on the tough task of informing the public by "[putting] the information out there... to ensure that the people of Jamaica have the balanced and accurate view of what is happening".

Pointing fingers at the opposition party, he said the JLP will not feed into deceptive politics and must not engage in "anti-social media" because "two wrongs don't make a right".

The Prime Minister was speaking Sunday evening at a Jamaica Labour Party St. Catherine South East constituency conference at the Portmore HEART Academy.
