Impasse between UCASE and Spectrum Management Authority still unresolved

UCASE General Secretary John Levy

Wednesday's meeting at the Ministry of Labour failed to resolve the impasse between the Union of Clerical Administrative and Supervisory Employees (UCASE) and the Spectrum Management Authority.

The union and the authority's management have been at odds over the contractual arrangements for three workers.

The union had issued a strike notice last month, but it was withdrawn following the Labour Ministry's intervention.

Following the meeting last month, one of the employees was reinstated and a new employment arrangement agreed for that worker, while Wednesday's meeting was meant to settle the two outstanding contracts.

UCASE General Secretary John Levy said there has been some movement in the talks but there is still no concensus on how to resolve the issue relating to one of the affected workers.

"We didn't make much progress at all. Suffice it to say, they have renewed one of the persons' contract and there is an offer on the table for another one, and there is no offer for the third person. So we could say we are one from three right now," he said, contending that what the company has done "is not in keeping with what the labour relations arrangement provides for".

Mr. Levy said the union will continue pursuing the matter.

"We have a date set to go back on the 6th of May and we are going to try and use the time as best as we can to try and come to a solution. But if we can't, we are going to continue to challenge and to do what we have to do in keeping with the labour laws because we're not letting up on this one," he maintained.
