Integrity Commission rules PNP's Dwayne Vaz should be charged

By Racquel Porter

The Integrity Comission has recommended that People's National Party candidate for Central Westmoreland, Dwayne Vaz, be charged for breaches of the Integrity Commission Act.

Dwayne Vaz is a former Member of Parliament for Central Westmoreland.

Mr. Vaz is to be charged for failure to provide information requested by the Integrity Commission's Director of Information Complaints.

Mr. Vaz is to be brought before the Court after the Commission found that he violated Section 43(1)b of the Integrity Commission Act.

The anti-corruption agency revealed in a report, which was tabled in the House of Representatives on Tuesday afternoon, that its Director of Corruption Prosecution has ruled that Mr. Vaz should be charged.

Mr. Vaz was defeated in the 2020 General Election by the Jamaica Labour Party's George Wright.

However, Mr. Vaz has been on the campaign trail up until recently in his capacity as the PNP candidate for the constituency.

Vaz responds

Mr. Vaz, in reacting to the Integrity Commission's recommendation that he should be criminally charged, said he is prepared to present all necessary information to the court to demonstrate his compliance.

In a letter obtained by Radio Jamaica News, Mr. Vaz said he is fully committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and transparency required by the Integrity Commission and will continue to engage cooperatively with all legal processes.

A timeline of the events and compliance efforts was also outlined in the letter.
