Investigation underway to determine cause of Petrojam fire

Senior Superintendent of Police Michael Phipps

A probe is underway to determine the cause of Tuesday night's fire at the state owned oil refinery, Petrojam.

Firefighters were quick on the scene to extinguish the blaze that affected three of the exchangers (the valves used to transport various fuel types) at the facility.

Senior Superintendent Michael Phipps, commanding officer for the Kingston Western police division, told Radio Jamaica News that the fires were quickly brought under control.

"It's not as serious as we (were) hearing," he told Radio Jamaica's Kirk Wright who arrived at the scene shortly after the fire started.

Furthermore, he said "nobody was injured, based on the reports coming to us."

Energy Minister Daryl Vaz subsequently said he did not expect a disruption in the supply of petroleum products resulting from the fire, "as we have enough stock to supply the trade while we get back (to normal operations)."

"There's no need for panic or worry in the industry," he stressed.
